🎵 How to Make Your Choir Classroom More Inviting 🎵
Let’s face it—our choir rooms do a lot. They’re rehearsal spaces, hangout zones, a home away from home, and sometimes even storage closets (🙃). So why not make them as inviting and inspiring as the music we create in them?
When I first started teaching choir, I was barely keeping my head above water. I was a sleep-deprived new mom who would tear up at the thought of putting together a bulletin board. 😭
It took a few years (and many restful nights) to figure out that adding just a bit of personal touches to the classroom could transform a sterile room to an inviting, welcoming space for my students. Plus, the extra touches made me feel at home!
If you’re looking to give your room a “glow-up”, creating an inviting choir classroom can make all the difference. A warm, welcoming room not only reflects your personality but also helps students feel comfortable, engaged, and ready to sing! 🎤💖
Here are my favorite ways to level up your choir space with a touch of style, inspiration, and cozy vibes without breaking the bank!
🎨 1. Set the Tone with Wall Decorations and Color!
Your walls are prime real estate! Choose a couple of colors that you love and use those as the basis of your decorating. Fill those walls with colorful posters, quotes, word walls, or visuals that reflect your classroom vibes.
My high school choir room has a Broadway theme. I ordered musical cards for my bulletin board and laminated the covers of all my old Playbills to string up above my whiteboard. Check out this blog post with a Broadway Bulletin Board freebie!
Ideas:
🎼 Music-themed inspirational quotes
🎭 Posters highlighting different musical genres or famous composers
🌎 Visuals that teach like word walls
💡 2. Upgrade Your Lighting Game
Fluorescent lights aren't exactly mood-boosting. A few well-placed lighting alternatives can soften the atmosphere and make your room feel more inviting:
String lights ✨ (Soft white Christmas lights are great!)
LED color-changing lamps and strips
Fun lamps around the classroom
Just be sure all lighting is safe and is allowed by your school.
🌿 3. Bring in a Little Nature
Plants make any space feel more alive (literally). If you don't have a green thumb, don't worry—there are plenty of great faux plants out there. 🌱 (My classroom doesn’t have windows so fake greenery is my “go to”!)
Small potted succulents on windowsills
Hanging planters in corners of room
A tall faux plant to fill an empty spot
Students love seeing something green in a sea of chairs and risers!
📝 4. Add Personalized Touches
Let your classroom reflect you and your choir family. These little extras can make your room feel like a second home:
A letter board with weekly music-themed quotes
A student spotlight board to recognize choir achievements
Photos from concerts, trips, and spirit days 🎶📸
A bulletin board where students can pin song requests or leave a note.
🎶 5. Feature Student Work and Pictures
There’s no better way to build classroom pride than showcasing what your students create. Leave room for:
Feature music related art
Showcase your student’s achievements outside of choir (athletes, awards, etc.)
Photos from performances or rehearsal moments
Students LOVE seeing their work celebrated—and so do families and visitors!
😜 6. Add the FUN! 😜
Add a little fun to your room.
Create personalized, music-related memes or better yet, let the students create a few!
Allow students to design a bulletin board or poster to showcase in your room.
You don’t need a total classroom makeover or spend a fortune to make your space feel special. A few intentional, decorative touches can transform your choir room into a place where students feel inspired, safe, and ready to create music together.
✨ Happy decorating!
