Transitioning from elementary to middle school can be tough for students, especially when they miss out on traditional Halloween festivities like classroom parties and costume parades. Even high schoolers appreciate a break from the norm to celebrate Halloween in a fun and different way. 🎉
At my school, students are not allowed to wear their costumes on Halloween. However, this doesn’t stop them from having a high-energy, sugar-fueled day. I’ve found a way to harness that excitement into a productive and enjoyable class. Here’s a Halloween lesson plan that combines learning with a whole lot of fun! 🎃👻
Halloween Lesson Plan for Middle and High School Choirs 🎶👻
Create the Ambiance 🎃
Dim the lights and play a Halloween-themed ambiance video, such as this to set the mood. Cozy Autumn Village Halloween Ambience 🎃 Scary Halloween Sounds👻 Halloween Background Music
Vocal Warm-ups in a Minor Key 🎵
Adapt your usual five-tone warm-ups to a minor key.
Incorporate Halloween-themed songs like “Ghost of John” and “Purple People Eater.” 🎶👻
Sight Singing 🎼
Provide students with a sight-singing exercise in a minor key to keep with the spooky theme.
Game Time! 🎲👻
Halloween Spooky Singing Race: A high-energy game where students practice sight singing in teams, competing in a singing race.
Circle It Up Halloween Brain Break Icebreaker Game: Students form inner and outer circles, facing partners to discuss fun questions like, “If you found a broom to fly on, where would you go first?” The circles rotate after each question. 🎃
Fast Talker Game: Halloween Edition: A zero-prep game where students pair up and respond to prompts from a projected PDF slideshow.

Candy Time! 🍬🎃
As students leave the class, hand out a piece of candy to each student. After all, isn’t that what Halloween is all about? 🎃🍭
Embrace the Halloween craziness instead of fighting it! Your students will appreciate a fun and memorable choir class. 🎶👻
Happy Singing! 🎃🎵
