➡️Quick Ideas To Add Fun To Your Choir Rehearsal🎤

Just popping into your inbox today to share a few things that have brought joy and happiness to my choirs at a time when we are all feeling overwhelmed and tired 💛🎶

I am in the middle of our high school musical rehearsals for Annie 🎭 and preparing for over 40 students to attend our state’s Solo and Ensemble Contest in two weeks 🎼🏆. I have no doubt that you can relate to feeling tired and a little burnt out at this time of year 😅

I hope that the following ideas can help brighten your (and your students’) day! ✨

🎵 Say the Word on Beat Challenge – Solfege Edition!

I confess… I love TikTok and scroll at night to wind down at the end of a long day 📱😆

Last Friday, my high school choirs used this video as part of our “Choir Wars” and had SO much fun! 🙌 First we practiced as a group and then I had one volunteer from each section of the choir perform for the class. It turned into a fun, low-pressure competition that took the last 10–15 minutes of class ⏱️🎶

Pro-tip: There seem to be several of these kinds of videos on YouTube. Search “Say the Word on Beat Challenge.” 🔎

🧦 Fun Sock Friday

My Varsity choir leaders started this new tradition in choir this year and it has been a hit!

It’s simple: everyone is invited to wear fun socks 🧦✨ Then we quickly meet after school to take a Fun Sock Friday picture, and one of the choir leaders posts it on Instagram 📸

There have even been variations including googly eyes and stickers 😂 They love it… and I don’t have to organize anything!! Win-win! 🙌

🎶 Throwback Thursday / Flashback Friday

I’ve been doing this tradition for over 2 years now and my students LOVE it! 💙

Students make a list of choir songs they have sung in the past (dating back to 6th grade choir), and we choose one to sing each Friday. What they don’t realize is that it is a sneaky way to get other students to sight-sing, since not everyone in the room has sung the song before! 👀🎼

I let the students choose the song the day before so I don’t have to worry about planning it. Easy for me, fun for them! 🙌

🎲 Friday Game Day

When I first started teaching, our band director gave me some great advice: Never teach a new concept on a Friday.

I’ve taken this to heart for years and instead focus on reviewing what we worked on earlier in the week and adding some fun 🎉 Thus, Fun Fridays were born!

What does a typical Friday look like for me?

🎵 A shorter rehearsal
🎶 Vocalize
👀 Sight-sing / Bell Ringer
🔁 Review concepts from earlier in the week
🎲 15–20 minutes of a game to end class

It keeps energy high, reinforces learning, and gives everyone something to look forward to at the end of a long week 💛

Not sure what kind of games to play in choir? Check out some of my favorites here! 🎉🎼

Good luck this week!

Happy Singing!🎉 Melanie
